Goodbye Comfy Couches!

31 January 2008

Couchless living room Our couches were tired. Not worn out completely, but we have had them since 1996, and they have weathered the growing up of a wiley puppy, and the beginning years of two crazy boys, and just recently they developed two small tears in the seat of one of the cushins, so we decided to get a new set. They were dingy, kinda worn in, but they were also old friends that cradled me in my nest every night for almost twelve years. Tonight, friends who found our ad on freecycle came and picked them up to take them to a new home for a few more years of love, but tonight our house is empty. Tomorrow our new couches arrive, which are totally cool looking (although slightly less comfy), and we’ll really enjoy them and love them, but I can’t help but mourn those big massive couches that Julie bought in L.A. at Macy’s with her mom on a whim. They were $5k if I recall, or maybe more? It was her savings that she had collected before we got together, and I couldn’t argue, so I just waited for the delivery. I still remember the night they arrived on a truck (Starving Students), and when they were dropped in place, I laid down on them and promptly fell asleep. Our relationship (the couch and I) was sealed, and we have loved each other every day since. But like many a good thing that lasts a little too long, sometimes it’s just time to move on, and I’m glad we were able to leave on good terms. Knowing they won’t go to landfill immediately, and that they will be used and loved by friends makes me feel good, and more accepting of the change. My boys are both a little bummed out, as these are the only couches they’ve ever known – they’ve spilled gallons of milk on them, lost countless legos and gold fish crackers in the cushins, and have both crashed out on them countless times. I think we all will miss them, even as we learn to love the new friends we’re about to make.

Flickr is da bomb

Okay… I’ve been hiding under a rock all this time… but dude, Flickr rocks. I signed up for a 2-year account as well as signing up Julie, and this will replace our pathetic online gallery. Now, to figure out all the bells and whistles…
